How did we find the place to go camping at Stensland Family Farms (one night via Harvest Hosts) near Sioux Falls? With each camping trip, Harvest Hosts and the app is a key part of the planning process. Within the app, you plug in your route. Then, after indicating how many miles off your route you’re willing to go, the driving map is dotted with wineries, farms and other venues.
That’s exactly how we located this special, heartland farm. And, we’re so glad we did! A terrific stopover en route to the Badlands National Park (check out our blog of photographing the Badlands).
Note: When visiting Stensland Family Farms, use the address in the Harvest Hosts app. Other store locations pop up making Siri a bit confused.
One of the fun elements of traveling with an RV? It’s almost never a rush to get from one location to another. Part of our planning is baking in time to go off the beaten paths, see and savor new venues.
But, it’s not just the venue. It’s the drive there, the setting and the areas nearby.
Gone are the days of reaching our ultimate destination by driving as many hours as we can in a given day. Instead, we try to drive a few hours and stop at a Harvest Hosts along the way.
Camping at Stensland Family Farms near Sioux Falls, Nestled in the Heartland
Located on the border of Iowa and South Dakota , this is a hard working, family farm complete with a store on the farm. Plus, they also run a few retail stores located across town where they sell their dairy products.
Their delightfully light ice creams are super sweet treats. The Salted Caramel Pecan and How Now Brown Cow received a big wow from us. Since I’m more of a salty snack girl, the Monterrey Jack cheese with olives and habanero cheese curds were calling my name.
Their small store offerred canned goods, locally produced eggs, honey, ground beef, nuts, candies, pastas, soup mixes and other goods were available too.
But, How Was the Camping Experience?
This was our thrid consecutive night in Sheen’s Bean (aka nuCamp Tab 400 Boondock) at a Harvest Hosts location on our journey. As we were remote and well off the beaten path, farmland roads waited to be explored. With rolling hills, fluffy clouds, greens and golds surrounding the farm, photographic moments were waiting to be taken.
Leaving Dave and dogs at the camper, I was off chasing the light for a few.
Afterwards, Dave and I cooked up dinner in Sheen’s Bean as we watched the last lavender light of day fade into nightfall.
