Your Art in Your Heart

Following Your Heart in Your Art

by Sheen Watkins

There’s something different with those of us who are creatives. Your heart in your art inspires action, energy and focus. We see and feel the world differently.

Sometimes our senses go into overdrive when we lease expect it. Other times we search for inspiration to find our creative groove.

One thing’s for sure, forcing creativity is needed at times. Although, it doesn’t typically have the same outcome as those times where we just feel it.

So if looking for ideas to ‘force’ creativity naturally, where it comes from your heart, check out our list below.

5 Ideas for Redirecting Your Heart in Your Art

  • Search your existing, old, undone ‘stuff’ – As artists we keep images, sketches, old photo files, designs that we started but didn’t finish. There’s undone work that with your fresh eyes take on a new life. When you discover a gem in your own jewelry box, it sparkles a little brighter!
  • Talk to someone – Instead of searching books, driving for hours, sitting in a dark room, chat. Yes, have a conversation. Talk to someone that understands you, your work. They don’t have to be a creative. just someone that listens. When we share ideas and concepts out loud, it’s amazing what happens when someone asks us a few questions. We think. We consider. And, we find inspiration.

  • Reach for your least used tools. That lens that’ hiding deep in the camera bag? Or, the pastels or brushes hiding under the layers of other tools. Or, instead of opening up the computer, find a pencil and paper. Write. So what if you make a mistake, that’s what erasers are for. When you return to your roots, ideas start growing.
  • Step away. Take a break. Take the pressure off to create. Instead, just enjoy the freedom to be in your current moment. When you give yourself space, as an artist it almost never fails. Inspiration happens when you’re not looking for it.
  • Or, try a different outlet. For example, if you’re into fiber arts, try cooking. A sketch artist? Attend a jewelry making class. Photographer? Try watercolor. Explore a different genre for fun.

Sometimes finding inspiration is really easy. Those are the moments where we wish we could bottle up and save that creativity for the dry spell. When the dry spell happens?

It’s giving yourself permission to try non-traditional ways of finding creativity, returning to your roots or stepping away for a bit!

Very good advice. Creativity sometimes doesn`t come easy. We have the idea of it just floating to people but in fact a lot can be done to make it float 😉
