Do you have a photography addiction? Yep, this is a little tongue in cheek. Many of us love our photography. There’s something about our time behind the lens. But how do you know if we’re off kilter or completely addicted?
And, is photography addiction really a bad thing?
Here’s a few signs of “potential” photography addition. Not that I have a single one (yeah, right). Read on and if you have an addition to the addiction, bring it on in the comments below!
Signs of Photography Addiction
- There’s only two times you’ll break out your camera. When you’re alone or with someone.
- Your idea of a good conversation at a cocktail party or Zoom video call includes f/stops, ISO and aperture. Mix in a little gear-head stuff too.
- You’re on vacation with your wife (true story!). You find an awesome junkyard to shoot. Really wasn’t her idea of a good vacation time. So what did Carl Schmidt (check out his website: Federal Hill Photography) do? Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate!
- You were going to go to bed at 10:00. It’s midnight and you’re still processing. Rinse. Repeat.
- It’s today. You have to go shoot something or the day will not be complete. The camera is speaking to you. You can hear it.
- You’re at a shoot, you know you’ve got enough good shots to choose from. You keep shooting anyway. After all, it’s digital.
- When you don’t have your camera with you, your index finger wants to press something!
- The best shot opportunities happen when you don’t have your camera with you. Woulda, shoulda, coulda.
- You have your primary go-to lenses that you live and breathe by. However, your other bag or closet holds a lot of other ‘must-have’ items. You know the ones. They rarely see the light of day.
- Lens Clens by Hoodman (Amazon) are in your car, diaper bag, your purse, your brief case, your coat pockets, pant pockets. Yes, they’ve even been through the laundry.
- TV just wouldn’t be complete without your Laptop, Lightroom (or other post processing software). What’s the point if you can’t multi-task with something you really enjoy. (ummm, not the TV show!)
- Your sacred space includes: desktop, laptop, external drives, camera bags, camera closet, shooting locations, shooting time.
Here’s a few more:
- Sacred space revisited. Oh yes, our shooting time and post processing time! It’s is as sacred as it gets!
- You went to sleep thinking about your shoot yesterday.
- You woke up thinking about the shoot today.
- 90% of your bookmarks on your bookmarks bar relate to photography and your photography life.
- The idea of traveling without your camera? Holy smokes, the nightmare comes to life.
The #1 Sign of Photography Addiction
- You’re leaving for vacation. The car or SUV is full and there’s no more room. What or who is left behind? Definitely not the camera gear.
If you have a few of these, chances are your photography addiction is here to stay. Is there a cure? Do we want one?
