When we think of memories and moments, most cases we are referring to our own. But, the reality is, memories and moments walk on a two way street. Other’s have memories and moments with us. How do you want others to remember you?
Our memory of a sunset, a special occasion, things we love doing and career highlights bring personal joy. Many of our memories include people. Husbands, wives, kids, pets (they’re not people but they’re family), co-workers and others who crossed our paths along life’s journey.
“Memory is the diary we all carry about with us.” Oscar Wilde
Yet, the difference between good and bad memories are defined by experiences. How we treat others, what we say and how we say it. What we say and what we do, lasts in the memories of others.
Memories and Moments
The People Experiences that Shine
Remember the teachers, the business partners, the friends, the family members who cared? Really cared. Even when the love was tough. How and what they said came from a place that deep down inside, you knew had the right intention.
To this day, we recall that tough teacher who made us better. The friend who had the courage to tell us we need to make changes. The business partner who offered constructive feedback that helped us grow.
The People that Taint – Still Taught
We also recall those individuals that cross our lives that, quite frankly, taught us how not to be. The memory of how they talked and acted towards us and others. What they said and how they said it. Or they said one thing while doing just the opposite. The personal pride in being the ‘toughest person in the room.’
Their delivery emerged from a place that felt self-serving, callous or even just mean.
The sad side of the negative experiences is that many times they can’t be overcome. Particularly if they are repeat offenders. Not because they can’t change. It’s because they won’t change, or won’t be given the opportunity. The moment and memory over multiple events remain.
Memories and Moments: We Have Choices
As we approach this week and beyond, we have choices. We can choose to be the person that creates moments and memories that shine. That come from a place of sharing and empathizing with the feelings and hearts of others . When we are part of the memories that shine – even the tough ones – we made a difference for someone else.
