The horizon light at the beginning or end of the day energizes and soothes. We start our days, our sunrises with intentions. And, many times we end our days at sunset reviewing accomplishments and setting a plan for the next day.
What about the hours in between sunrise and sunset? Are we missing the point? Are we only focusing on our goals, the magic hours, that we lose sight of what’s in front of us?
Wait, is this horizon stuff about photography or business?
Actually, both.
In business, our horizon reflects our desired success, completed tasks, goals and wins. As a landscape photographer, our horizon is the holy grail of light. The hovering blue and gold light that’s before and after the sun rises and the sun sets.
As a result of staying in our respective work zones, we may overlook or even miss the other amazing and important sights the journey has to offer.
While we take joy in photographing the beautiful light, there’s as much beauty that lies in between. All you have to do is go for a walk, take a drive, stroll in your own backyard. If you’re seeking beauty, something interesting, you’ll find it. Your eyes are open. You are receptive. As a result, you are elevating your skill as a photographer.
In business, we celebrate big wins, the bottom line and goal achievement. In reality, these short sided and short lived moments reflect only part of the story. When you observe, listen, understand and value the people, you’re seeking the foundation of the business. Awareness of the tasks, support of the people and their knowledge forges longevity of success. When you actively engage and participate, you are elevating your skill as a leader.
Our End is the Beginning
Today, what happened this morning reflects history. What you do now, and later today shapes your horizon. Will you stop? Take photographs? Ask questions? Live in the moment? By living and being present, what happens at the horizon line changes.
When you reach that horizon, there’s personal reward in looking back at the positive, intentional steps and sights you took along the way.
